This collection, consisting of various land deeds, tax receipts, and other legal documentation, illustrates the expansion of Slippery Rock University’s property between 1888 and the mid-1990s. Including an original agreement for Slippery Rock State Normal School in 1888, a collection of land transaction records for 249 Maltby Avenue (present day Robert A. Biographical / Historical

The present-day Robert A. Lowry Center (249 Maltby Avenue) was originally the private residence of History Professor Howard Headland. The home, built in 1928, was sold to Slippery Rock State Teachers College and became the location of the Office of Alumni Affairs on campus. The building then housed the offices of the Dean of Academic Services, the Office of Continuing Education, and Graduate Studies and Research over the next few decades. In 1988, the Headland House was renamed the Robert A. Lowry Center in honor of Dr. Robert Lowry.

Biographical / Historical

Edith B. Galbreath, the attorney whose law firm assisted with the transactions for the 249 Maltby Avenue property, was the first woman admitted to the Butler County Bar. Her father, Judge James Galbreath, was also a notable attorney in the Butler area. While serving as secretary for her father’s law firm, Edith began studying and practicing law. The father-and-daughter pair eventually opened their own firm, Galbreath and Galbreath, until James’ death. After her father’s death, Edith became associated with Luther Braham and opened the firm, Galbreath and Braham. The two practiced together until 1947 when Darrell Gregg joined the firm under the firm name Galbreath, Braham, and Gregg. Edith passed away while still a resident of Butler County in 1952.
