Biography

Claire Schmieler came to the university in 1966 to work as a night nurse in the infirmary. She rose to the position of Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, retiring in 2003. Schmieler was instrumental in the transition to the current Student Health Center, an organization for total student health and wellness. She implemented the Health Education and Health Promotion programs to further this vision. 

Schmieler was a member of the Presidents Commission for Women, the National Health Association and the Assessment Movement. She has been the recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Service. The Claire R. Schmieler Leadership Institute for Professional Women is named in her honor.
