This collection consists of records documenting Slippery Rock University’s history from 1889 to approximately 2019. The bulk of the material is from 1889 through 1999. The collection includes papers and correspondence, reports, publications, photographs, audiovisual materials, ephemera, realia, and memorabilia. Also included are postcard collections and scrapbooks.

Biographical Note

Robert and Karen Watson donated this collection. Dr. Robert J. Watson retired from Slippery Rock University as the Vice President of Student Life in 2006. He is an alumnus of Slippery Rock State College, graduating in 1970. The Watson family has had a long association with the University and was instrumental in its founding and development. Watson’s great grandfather was an original stock holder of the Slippery Rock Normal School Association and an early member of the Board of Trustees.

Robert and Karen Watson acquired this material from family members, from private parties, and from professional associates of Robert’s. Some of the material was used to support Watson’s research for the second edition of his book Slippery Rock University: The Legend Behind the Name, published in 2011.
