Biographical / Historical

Philip Tramdack was the director of library services for Bailey Library at Slippery Rock University from 2002 until his retirement in 2014. Prior to Slippery Rock University (SRU), Tramdack served as chief library administrator at the College of New Jersey Library. Having worked in the academic library system since 1966, Tramdack witnessed a pivotal period in which libraries began to evolve from traditional library spaces into more technologically diverse environments. Tramdack oversaw Bailey Library during this shift and made upgrading services and technology a priority in his mission to evolve the university library and overall community.

Other former directors of Bailey Library include Barbara Farah, director of library services between 1995 and 2002 and William Garton (1935-2006), the director of library services from 1978 through 1995. Each director individually played vital roles in the advancement of Bailey Library through the 20th century.

Additionally, the chief librarian of Maltby Library from 1965 through 1976, Harold Helmrich (1911-1991), was instrumental in the construction planning process of a new library building on Slippery Rock State College’s campus. This library, now referred to as Bailey Library, began construction in 1969.

Custodial History

The contents of this collection are from varying sources. Most of Series 1: Bailey Library Records, with the exception of Sub-Series A: Bailey Library Original Construction Records, were kept by Philip Tramdack at his personal office until his retirement in 2014. Though, not all of the contents of these files were from Tramdack personally. Many files included in this series illustrate Barbara Farah’s time serving as Director of Library Services at Slippery Rock University from 1995 to 2002. The contents of Sub-Series A: Bailey Library Original Construction Records were given to the Slippery Rock University Archives at the time of Philip Tramdack’s retirement, though the contents do not reflect Tramdack’s time serving as Director of Library Services. They do, however, reflect the efforts made by then Chief Librarian, Harold Helmrich, in planning the construction of what is now known as Bailey Library. In addition, Series 3: Maltby Library were contained alongside the files for the original construction of Bailey Library but include correspondence, records, receipts, and other files pertaining to the various construction projects undertaken by the Maltby Library during the early 1960s, before the construction of what is now known as Bailey Library. It is the understanding of the Slippery Rock University Archives that these original construction files from the 1960s were given to Philip Tramdack during his time as Director of Library Services.
